The future finally arrived, in no less startling a fashion than if a spaceship landed at 14th and Park, planted seeds in the rubble that sprung up into buildings and metal trees, then took off in a flash of white noise.

The only trace those concentric circles in the pavement, like crop circles.

It’s like 1968 never happened.

Away from the monuments, Fairy Tales from the Fault Lines is a series of personal dispatches from my life along Washington DC’s shifting central ‘fault lines’ where a gentrifying and long-divided city was forging a new identity as my daughter was growing up. Maybe I just wanted to know if I could love my hometown.
